TALLAHASSEE, FL — The next time you renew or replace your Florida driver license, it may look a little different. Florida is rolling out a newly designed driver license and identification card beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30, featuring several recognizable pieces of the state’s history.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said the new credentials will be available at service centers statewide Sept. 30, with online orders expected by early November.
The front features Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, the oldest masonry fortress in the continental United States. The design also includes a Florida orange in the word “Florida,” a manatee and an alligator incorporated into the REAL ID star.
The back pays tribute to Florida’s Space Coast with Space Shuttle Discovery, which flew 39 missions before its final landing in Florida in 2011. It also features “Let Us Alone,” from Florida’s first unofficial flag.
Residents do not need to replace their current license or ID. Existing valid credentials will remain in circulation and gradually be phased out.
