KISSIMMEE, FL — Kissimmee Gateway Airport is set to receive a $21.1 million upgrade to Taxiway Alpha after the Kissimmee City Commission approved the acceptance of federal funding for the project.
The Federal Aviation Administration will fund 95% of the project, while the City anticipates the Florida Department of Transportation will contribute another 4% at a later date. The airport will be responsible for the remaining 1%.
The project will rehabilitate Taxiway Alpha’s pavement and shift the taxiway 50 feet east to meet FAA standards for larger aircraft now using the airport. New LED edge lighting and directional signs will also be installed to improve visibility, efficiency and safety.
Airport officials said the improvements were identified through the airport’s Capital Improvement Plan and are intended to address the growing use of larger aircraft while rehabilitating the pavement before its condition deteriorates further.
“Kissimmee Gateway Airport continues to grow as a gateway to Central Florida, and our airfield has to keep pace,” Aviation Director Shaun J. Germolus said.
City officials also credited Congressman Darren Soto for supporting federal investment in Central Florida infrastructure.
A construction timeline has not yet been announced. The city said timing will be released once final contracts are completed and materials are procured.
