WINTER HAVEN, FL — The City of Winter Haven, Polk County Veteran’s Council and first responder agencies from across Polk County will come together Friday, Sept. 11, for the 17th Annual Honoring Our Heroes – Remembering the Day event.
This year’s ceremony marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and will honor those who lost their lives that day, as well as Polk County’s law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs and military members, both active and retired.
The event will begin with a Freedom Walk at 5:30 p.m. through downtown Winter Haven. The walk will be led by the Lake Region High School Marine ROTC honor guard and is intended to recognize the dedication and sacrifices made by first responders.
Following the walk, Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe and Winter Haven Fire Chief Drew Neubrand will provide special greetings. Chief Warrant Officer 4 James Ring, who has more than 26 years of military and law enforcement service, will serve as the keynote speaker.
A cross and boot display will honor Polk County first responders who have died in the line of duty. Additional displays will commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, while law enforcement, fire and military agencies will have equipment and exhibits available for the public.
Local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and a multi-agency Honor Guard will present the colors.
Winter Haven Public Safety is sponsoring the event, with the Winter Haven Police and Fire departments leading the effort. Law enforcement and fire agencies from throughout Polk County are expected to participate.
