Florida Trooper Hospitalized After Crash During I-4 Pursuit in Lakeland

LAKELAND, FL — A Tallahassee man was arrested early Monday morning following a pursuit on Interstate 4 that began in Hillsborough County and continued into Polk County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said troopers were pursuing a reckless vehicle when the driver attempted to exit I-4 in Polk County. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle lost control and entered the path of an FHP sergeant’s patrol vehicle, resulting in a crash.

Following the collision, the suspect fled on foot and attempted to carjack a passing vehicle, according to FHP. Troopers deployed a Taser and took the suspect into custody during the attempted carjacking.

The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Antwan Stephen Brinson of Tallahassee. Brinson was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being taken to the Polk County Jail. FHP said he faces numerous felony charges.

The FHP sergeant suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The incident caused lane closures along I-4 during the early morning hours. All lanes reopened by approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday.
