Polk County Fire Rescue Promotes Charlie True to Assistant Chief

BARTOW, FL — Polk County Fire Rescue has promoted Deputy Fire Chief Charles “Charlie” True to the rank of Assistant Chief, effective July 6.

True brings nearly 20 years of fire service experience to the position, including 11 years serving in chief officer roles. He began his career with Polk County in 2006 as an Emergency Medical Technician with Polk County EMS and has advanced through numerous positions, including EMT, Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic, Engineer/Paramedic, Captain/Paramedic, Battalion Medical Chief, Battalion Chief, and Deputy Fire Chief.

As Assistant Chief, True will oversee the department’s Emergency Services branch, including Community Risk Reduction, Operations, and Emergency Medical Services.

“Charlie has earned the respect of those around him through his integrity, humility, commitment to excellence and dedication to our mission,” said Fire Rescue Chief Shawn Smith. “His experience, innovative thinking, and commitment to our members will help us continue building the professional, progressive, and service-focused organization we all envision.”

True said he is honored to take on the new leadership role.

“I am humbled by the trust and belief shown by the fire chief and county leadership as I promote into my new role,” True said. “My mission is to make sure our members continue to have the tools, education, and support they need and deserve to provide the best care to Polk County residents and visitors.”
