Hardee County Lifts Blue-Green Algae Health Alert on Peace River

HARDEE COUNTY, FL — The Florida Department of Health in Polk County, which also oversees public health services for Hardee County, has lifted a health alert for harmful blue-green algae toxins along the Peace River off Lake Branch Road. The alert was originally issued on February 23, 2026.

According to DOH-Polk, follow-up water samples collected by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection did not detect algae toxins. Officials say the results indicate the public may resume water-related activities in the area.

Despite the clearance, health officials urge continued caution, noting that blue-green algae bloom conditions can change quickly when environmental factors are favorable. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid water contact if visible algae blooms are present.

Blue-green algae, a bacteria common in Florida freshwater, can rapidly grow into blooms that discolor water and form surface mats with strong odors. These blooms may also appear as foam, scum, or paint-like substances.

Exposure to algae toxins can pose health risks to humans, pets, and wildlife. Sensitive individuals, including children and the elderly, may be at risk even at low concentrations.

Current water quality updates are available through Protecting Florida Together.
