The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred at approximately 2:57 p.m. on February 7, 2026, at the intersection of Waverly Road and Hodge Street in Waverly, Florida.
A 2015 Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound on Waverly Road. A motorcycle driven by 35-year-old David Durham was traveling westbound on Waverly Road at a speed that appears to have exceeded the posted 35 mph limit. The Highlander began a left turn onto Hodge Street and crossed into the path of the motorcycle.
Upon impact, Durham was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest on the north shoulder of Waverly Road, approximately 75 feet west of the point of impact. He was not wearing a helmet. The Highlander rotated counterclockwise and was redirected northwest approximately 15-20 feet. All occupants in the Highlander were wearing seat belts.
First responders found Durham unresponsive, with a bystander performing CPR. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver and two passengers in the Highlander sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, where they were expected to be treated and released the same day.
The investigation is ongoing based on evidence and witness statements.
