Winter Haven Man, 29, Killed in Rear-End Crash with Tanker on SR-60

Early this morning, at approximately 1:10 a.m., a fatal traffic crash occurred on State Road 60 east of Clarence Gordon Jr Road in Polk County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2009 Honda Accord, driven by a 29-year-old man from Winter Haven, was traveling eastbound on SR-60 at a high rate of speed. A Freightliner Cascadia tractor pulling a tank semi-trailer, operated by a 62-year-old man from Lithia, was also traveling eastbound and had stopped as required at a railroad crossing.

The driver of the Honda Accord failed to stop and collided with the rear of the stopped tanker truck. The 29-year-old driver of the Honda Accord suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner, who was transporting a load of molten sulfur, was not injured. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Nothing further at this time.
