FBI Arrests Miami Heat Player in Major Sports Betting Probe

Orlando, FL – On Thursday, October 23, 2025,  Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested early Thursday morning as part of an ongoing FBI investigation into illegal sports betting and gambling schemes, according to a statement from ESPN reporter Shams Charania. The arrest took place at an Orlando hotel and is linked to a broader probe overseen by FBI Director Kash Patel, who was confirmed to the position in February 2025.

The Eastern District of New York, led by U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr., and FBI Director Kash Patel are scheduled to hold a press conference at 10:00 AM ET to announce details of the investigation, which includes multiple arrests. The investigation involves allegations of insider NBA information being used for prop bets and high-stakes poker games, with connections to organized crime networks, including four Mafia families.

A total of 34 individuals have been arrested across 11 states, with the scheme involving tens of millions of dollars, as reported by the Department of Justice. Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones were also arrested in related cases. The NBA has placed Rozier and Billups on administrative leave and has committed to cooperating with federal authorities.

The investigation builds on a 2024 case involving former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA and pleaded guilty to federal charges for manipulating game performance. Unusual betting activity was previously noted in a March 23, 2023, game involving Rozier, then with the Charlotte Hornets, where $13,759 in wagers targeted the under on his statistical props, leading to the closure of related betting markets.
