Tampa, FL – Tuesday, October 21, 2025 – A dramatic scene unfolded in Tampa this morning when a fire engine was stolen from St. Joseph’s Hospital, leading to a crash and the arrest of the suspect. At approximately 9:25 a.m., 59-year-old Warren Scudder allegedly entered the fire engine and took control of the vehicle while firefighters were inside the hospital.
Authorities say Scudder drove the stolen fire engine recklessly, colliding with a gray Lexus SUV at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and MacDill Ave. The driver of the SUV, an adult male, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Tampa Police responded rapidly, locating the stolen fire engine within minutes. By 9:38 a.m., officers had cornered the vehicle in the 4100 block of Poplar Ave., effectively blocking its path. Scudder was apprehended without further incident.
Scudder now faces charges of Grand Theft Auto and Hit and Run, with additional charges potentially forthcoming as the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet released a motive for the theft, and the incident has raised concerns about the security of emergency vehicles at public facilities.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Tampa Police Department. No further details are available at this time.
