PLANT CITY, FL — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun the next phase of construction on State Road (SR) 39 at the Trapnell Road intersection in Hillsborough County.
Early Thursday morning, March 5, 2026, traffic lanes on SR 39 shifted to the east side of the roadway between Sparkman Road and Kilgore Road, including through the Trapnell Road intersection. This move supports construction of the new southbound concrete roadway.
Drivers should anticipate potential delays and congestion in the work zone. Travel lanes through the Trapnell Road intersection will remain open, preserving access for emergency vehicles, residents, and eastbound/westbound traffic on Trapnell Road. Driveway access is also maintained.
Message boards and signage are in place to guide motorists. Officials urge drivers to slow down, stay alert, and exercise caution in the construction area.
The project replaces the intersection’s existing asphalt pavement with a more durable concrete surface. Last year, traffic was shifted to the west side of SR 39 in the same segment. Over the coming months, crews will continue building the new concrete roadway, with possible additional delays and congestion expected.
The construction cost for the project is $8 million. The project, identified as 445393-1-52-01, covers approximately 0.53 miles and is expected to be completed in Fall 2026.
