Winter Haven, FL – According to the arrest affidavit, a domestic dispute turned violent on March 17, 2025, when Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a dangerous shooting on Overlook Drive in Winter Haven. The suspect, Coleton Lynn Smith (DOB: July 4, 1999), allegedly fired six rounds from a .380 handgun and threatened to kill his family following an argument over a $50 rental car dispute with Enterprise.
Deputies arrived after reports of a male yelling threats, including “I am going to kill you,” accompanied by four gunshots. The suspect had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. A victim told deputies the argument escalated when the suspect stormed onto the screened-in porch, fired multiple shots, and left them fearing for their and their child’s safety. Six exit holes were later found in the porch door, along with six .380 caliber shell casings.
Another victim, reported the suspect reentered the house holding the gun, stood 10 feet from them, and repeated his threat to “kill everyone,” heightening their fear for their life. Two nearby witnesses corroborated the account, hearing loud pops and threats like “Fuck you, pussy, try me if you don’t believe,” prompting them to call 911.
The suspect, contacted by deputies via phone, defended his actions, claiming he had the right to shoot on his property. However, authorities rejected his defense, filing the following charges based on evidence and statements:
- Two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Domestic)
- Improper Display of a Firearm
- Discharging a Firearm in Public
- Use/Display of a Firearm During a Felony
- Culpable Negligence
Haines City Police tracked down the suspect, arresting him with his vehicle and the .380 handgun in tow. Uncooperative during the arrest, he was taken to the Polk County Processing Center without further incident. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the full scope of the event. Nothing further at this time.
