Polk County Launching Northeast Landfill Pilot Program to Combat Illegal Dumping

HAINES CITY, FL – Polk County residents in the northeast part of the county will soon have a new option for disposing of household waste and debris.

Beginning June 1, Polk County will open the Northeast Landfill Customer Convenience Center Pilot Program at 4001 Bannon Island Road in Haines City. The site will allow residents to self-haul eligible waste in addition to using regular curbside collection services.

County officials said the pilot program is aimed at reducing illegal dumping by providing a more convenient disposal option for residents in Northeast Polk County.

Accepted materials will include household waste, yard waste, bulk items, residential construction debris, tires and scrap metal.

“The goal of this pilot program is simple: make proper disposal easier and more accessible for residents in northeast Polk County,” said Brian Cogswell, director of Polk County’s Solid Waste Division. “When residents have convenient options, it helps protect our neighborhoods, our roadsides and our environment from illegal dumping.”

Disposal fees will vary by vehicle type. Cars, SUVs and pickup trucks will cost $10. Vehicles with trailers shorter than six feet will cost $18, while trailers between six and 16 feet will cost $27. Tires will cost $5 each.

Residents must show proof of Polk County residency. The facility will not accept cash payments. Tap to Pay, Apple Pay, debit cards and credit cards will be accepted.

The center will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
