Lakeland, FL – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred after a hit-and-run incident on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

The crash took place at approximately 9:01 p.m. on County Line Road at Swindell Road.

A witness reported that a black Mercedes Benz sedan rear-ended their vehicle at County Line Road and Frontage Road. When the witness exited their vehicle, the Mercedes fled northbound on County Line Road at high speed. The witness followed and observed the Mercedes fail to stop at the stop sign on Swindell Road. The Mercedes then left the roadway on the north side, entered a ditch, became airborne, traveled approximately 120 feet through the air, and struck a large tree.

Excessive speed and reckless driving, combined with dark conditions and wet roads, were contributing factors. An open beer bottle containing beer was located inside the Mercedes.

It has not been determined whether the driver or passenger were wearing seatbelts.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female passenger was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.

Deputies are working to locate next of kin for both occupants of the Mercedes. The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further at this time.
