On This Day in Polk County History – July 28, 1995: Oates Building Added to National Register of Historic Places

On July 28, 1995, the Oates Building, located at 124 South Kentucky Avenue in downtown Lakeland, was officially added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Constructed in 1925, the two-story structure is a notable example of Mission Revival/Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, featuring a stucco exterior, decorative arches, and a tile roof. The building reflects the architectural trends of the 1920s Florida land boom and represents the commercial growth of Lakeland during that period.

The building’s listing under National Register Reference Number 95000910 recognizes its contribution to the historical and architectural character of Polk County. It remains in use today as part of the city’s active downtown commercial district.
