FWC Promotes Awareness of Threatened Gopher Tortoises

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is inviting the public to participate in the 10th annual Gopher Tortoise Day on April 10, aimed at promoting conservation and awareness of the species.

According to the FWC, gopher tortoises are found in parts of all 67 counties across Florida and are commonly seen in neighborhoods, along roadways, and in public parks and forests. Gopher Tortoise Day was established in 2016 by the Gopher Tortoise Council to increase appreciation and support for the species.

The FWC encourages residents to support conservation efforts beyond April 10. Recommended actions include observing tortoises from a distance, creating tortoise-friendly yards with appropriate plants, and safely assisting tortoises crossing roadways by moving them in the direction they were traveling. Officials emphasize that tortoises should never be placed in water.

Residents are also encouraged to report sightings of tortoises and their burrows, as well as notify the FWC of any sick, injured, or deceased animals. Educational resources, including activities for children, are available through the FWC’s Gopher Tortoise Program.

Gopher tortoises are designated as a threatened species in Florida and are protected by law. It is illegal to harm, possess, or relocate tortoises, their eggs, or burrows without a permit. Wildlife violations can be reported to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline.

Spring marks an active period for gopher tortoises and other native wildlife species across the state.
