Lee County, FL — Matthew Curbelo, a former Lee County corrections officer and deputy, escaped from jail following his arrest for an alleged DUI, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Curbelo passed through three secured doors to exit the facility. Authorities say he pressed a button to open the first two doors and waited for an employee to open the final exit door from the outside, allowing him to walk out.
Curbelo told investigators no jail staff assisted in his escape and stated he fled because he wanted to go home. He has since been taken back into custody. Nothing further at this time.
