Senate Bill 92

Tallahassee, FL – Florida lawmakers are weighing a new bill that could soon require vehicles to sport license plates on both the front and back, a move that would make it the 30th state to adopt such a standard. Senate Bill 92, introduced by Sen. Joe Gruters, is gaining traction as a potential tool to curb hit-and-run incidents by enhancing vehicle identification.

The proposal comes in response to concerns that traffic cameras and eyewitnesses often fail to capture rear license plates, leaving law enforcement with limited leads in hit-and-run cases.

SB 92 has already cleared two Senate committees and is now under review by the appropriations committee.

If it secures final approval and is signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the legislation would take effect on July 1, 2025. However, drivers would have until January 1, 2026, to comply with the two-plate mandate. Nothing further at this time.
