The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a dump truck that resulted in the death of one of the drivers. The crash occurred at 5:45am Friday morning (July 18,2025) on Polk City Road, east of Hwy 557, Lake Alfred, FL.
A silver BMW sedan was travelling westbound on Polk City Road and the dump truck was heading eastbound. The BMW attempted to pass several westbound vehicles by moving into the eastbound lane. As the BMW entered a curve, the drivers of both vehicles noticed each other, and they both swerved to the south shoulder of the roadway. It was a head on collision, causing them to both to be pushed several feet into the south shoulder under a group of trees.
A fire ensued which totally engulfed the sedan and burned the engine compartment of the truck. The driver of the sedan was entrapped inside their vehicle and was determined to be deceased when first responders arrived.
The driver of the dump truck was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to a local hospital with minor non-life threatening injures. The driver of the sedan remains unidentified at this time due to the extensive fire damage.

Polk County, FL – A tragic accident occurred early this morning, Friday, July 18, 2025, at approximately 5:45 AM, at the intersection of County Road 557 and Polk City Road, between Lake Alfred and Interstate 4. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a severe collision involving a small car and a dump truck.
According to preliminary reports, the crash resulted in a fire at the scene and one confirmed fatality. Details regarding the cause of the accident and the identity of the deceased have not yet been released, pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.
The intersection remains closed as emergency crews and deputies work to clear the scene and investigate the incident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the roadway is reopened. The PCSO will provide updates as soon as the road is clear.
