City of Kissimmee Partners with Puerto Rican Retail Leaders to Attract Businesses and Jobs

KISSIMMEE, FL – In a move aimed at deepening economic connections and supporting business growth, the City of Kissimmee has entered into a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Centro Unido de Detallistas Puerto Rico (CUD), a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Puerto Rico’s retail and commercial sector.

The ceremonial signing occurred today, Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Kissimmee City Hall in the Commission Chambers. Mayor Jackie Espinosa represented the city, while Dr. Ramón C. Barquín III, President of CUD, signed on behalf of the organization.

This partnership seeks to build on Kissimmee’s established role as a key destination and hub for the Puerto Rican diaspora in Central Florida. The MOU outlines collaborative efforts including:

  • Identifying promising business opportunities in Kissimmee for Puerto Rican entrepreneurs and retailers
  • Offering resources, guidance, and networking to facilitate market entry and expansion
  • Organizing events, workshops, and seminars to link entrepreneurs with local business leaders
  • Exchanging valuable insights on economic trends and market conditions to drive sustainable growth

Mayor Jackie Espinosa emphasized the alignment between the city’s goals and the new collaboration.

“We are focused on attracting diverse retail businesses, supporting entrepreneurs, and strengthening our commercial corridors and downtown districts,” Mayor Espinosa said. “Those priorities align naturally with CUD’s mission to help Puerto Rican businesses grow and expand into new markets.”

Dr. Ramón C. Barquín III highlighted the cultural and economic significance of the agreement.

“Kissimmee has become a natural point of convergence for the Puerto Rican diaspora,” he said. “This collaboration formalizes a historic relationship that now translates into concrete opportunities for merchants, entrepreneurs, and families on both sides.”

CUD works to enhance the competitiveness and development of Puerto Rico’s retail sector, advocating for businesses across the island.

The MOU will next go before the Kissimmee City Commission for formal approval on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Once adopted, the partnership is anticipated to boost the city’s visibility, draw new investments, and contribute to local job creation—further solidifying Kissimmee as a dynamic center for commerce and innovation.
