Breaking News: FSU Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Five Injured; Suspect Identified as Deputy’s Son

Tallahassee, FL – April 17, 2025 – A shooting at Florida State University’s Student Union claimed two lives and injured five others, with the suspect identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Eichner, an FSU student and son of a Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputy.

Authorities confirmed that one of the weapons used was a duty firearm belonging to Eichner’s mother, recovered among three firearms at the scene. Eichner was shot by law enforcement and is in custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident, which occurred shortly before noon, triggered a campus lockdown and a rapid response from Tallahassee Police, FSU Police, and the FBI. The victims killed were not FSU students, and five others remain hospitalized, one in critical condition.

The university has canceled classes and events through Sunday as the investigation continues to uncover Eichner’s motive and the events leading to the tragedy.
