On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley rapidly intensified to a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph (240 km/h) as it approached the southwest coast of Florida. The storm made landfall at Cayo Costa, causing severe damage to the barrier islands and mainland coastal communities.

After landfall, Charley moved northeast through Charlotte Harbor and Port Charlotte before continuing inland through Arcadia, Polk County, and Orlando. Despite being inland, these areas experienced extreme winds, widespread structural damage, downed trees, and significant power outages.

The storm’s rapid intensification and powerful winds resulted in extensive property damage estimated at nearly $6.9 billion in Florida alone. The hurricane caused 10 fatalities in Florida and 15 total in the United States.

Following landfall, emergency response efforts began immediately to address the widespread destruction and restore essential services across the affected areas.
