PALM RIVER-CLAIR MEL, FL — Two motorcycles were involved in a fatal crash Friday night in Palm River-Clair Mel that left an 18-year-old Clearwater woman and a 31-year-old Tampa man dead, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 9:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at the intersection of US-41 and 24th Avenue South in Palm River-Clair Mel, an area southeast of Tampa.
Troopers said a 44-year-old Ruskin man was driving a Chevy Colorado westbound on 24th Avenue South while a Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by the 31-year-old Tampa man, was traveling northbound on US-41. The 18-year-old Clearwater woman was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle.
At the intersection, the Chevy driver turned left into the path of the motorcycle, which struck the pickup, according to troopers. A second Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by a 20-year-old Tampa man, was traveling northbound on US-41 behind the first motorcycle. Troopers said the rider saw the hazard, steered to the right to avoid the pickup and overturned.
All four people involved suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The 18-year-old woman and 31-year-old motorcyclist later died from injuries suffered in the crash. The 44-year-old pickup driver and 20-year-old motorcyclist survived. Nothing further at this time.
