LAKELAND, FL — Polk County officials have confirmed the county’s fifth rabies case of 2026 after a bat in Lakeland tested positive for the deadly virus.
On Monday, July 27, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control responded to a home on Lakewood Circle after a resident reported that her cat had been playing with a bat outside. Animal Control officers recovered the bat and sent it to a state laboratory for testing. Test results received Thursday, July 30, confirmed the bat was positive for rabies. Officials said the cat involved is currently vaccinated.
“Rabies is a deadly disease—we urge everyone to stay alert and avoid contact with stray or wild animals acting strangely,” Sheriff Grady Judd said. “If you see something suspicious, call us. Don’t take chances with your health. Also, please keep your pets’ vaccinations up to date.”
Residents are urged not to approach animals displaying unusual or aggressive behavior. Anyone who believes they or their pet may have been exposed to rabies should contact the PCSO Animal Control Section at 863-577-1762 immediately.
