LAKELAND, FL – The City of Lakeland said water sample results received Tuesday showed that unidentified filamentous cyanobacteria, a type of blue-green algae, may have helped cause lower oxygen levels overnight in Lake Hollingsworth during last week’s fish kill.
According to the city, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staff believe multiple environmental factors likely contributed to the gizzard shad fish kill, including spawning stress, fluctuating dissolved oxygen levels, and recent rainfall that can influence water temperature.
The City of Lakeland’s Public Works Department reported no additional fish mortalities during an inspection of Lake Hollingsworth conducted Tuesday morning.
