Winter Haven Fire along with Polk County Fire Rescue are on scene of the Cypress Junction Montessori School after a CO2 detector went off inside of the school this morning.
The school was immediately evacuated and all were safely outside when fire crews arrived.
Once one scene, Fire personnel confirmed the source of the leak was outside of the school with a small bit of odor inside. Students who complained of any sort of distress were immediately evaluated by medical personnel on scene.
The remaining students and staff were safely escorted to an adjacent building not connected to the impacted structure.
There are seven students being taken by ambulance to Winter Haven Hospital for
further evaluation with the remaining seven students who complained of any distress being transported by a school bus to Winter Haven Hospital. All parents have been notified by the school.
Crews have completed a thorough inspection and ventilation of the building and
the air quality is clear. Crews will remain on scene to continue evaluation out of an abundance of caution.
UPDATE ON INCIDENT AT CYPRESS JUNCTION MONTESORRI SCHOOL
The count of students transported to a local hospital has been updated to 11
by ambulance and 11 by school bus. All are in stable condition and parents
have been notified.
To clarify, the building CO detectors (initially the alert stated CO2, which was incorrect) sounded an alarm and the school was evacuated. There has been no gas detected inside of the structure. The source of what caused the alarm to occur is from the outside connection causing the alarms inside of the school to sound.
