New York Man Faces BUI Charges After Jet Ski Crash Injures Kids in Madeira Beach

Madeira Beach, FL – On Sunday, October 12, 2025, at approximately 2:33 p.m., the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a jet ski crash near Johns Pass. Daniel Patrick Grubert, 48, of Piermont, New York, was operating a rented 2024 Yamaha WaveRunner when he collided with another rented Yamaha WaveRunner driven by a 45-year-old man from Illinois.

According to authorities, Grubert was racing another jet ski, failed to look ahead, and turned around, noticing an imminent crash. He jumped off his WaveRunner, which then struck the other vessel. The other WaveRunner’s driver had two passengers, aged 7 and 8, on board. All three were ejected and recovered from the water by the Madeira Beach Fire Department. The juveniles were transported to a local hospital, one with life-threatening injuries and one with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other WaveRunner was uninjured.

Grubert displayed signs of impairment and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was arrested and charged with two counts of Boating Under the Influence Causing Serious Bodily Injury and one count of Reckless Operation of a Vessel. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail. The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further at this time.
