31-Year-Old Lakeland Man Killed in Scooter-Vehicle Crash

Lakeland, FL – On Friday, October 24, 2025, a fatal crash involving a Segway electric scooter occurred east of Lakeland at the intersection of US 92 and Fairway Avenue. Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue units responded to the scene at 8:08 p.m.

The collision involved a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS, driven by 60-year-old Andrew Almaraz of Winter Haven, and a Segway electric scooter operated by 31-year-old Joshua Caleb Carpenter of Lakeland. Carpenter was pronounced deceased at the scene. Almaraz was uninjured and cooperated fully with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide detectives.

Preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota was traveling west on US 92 at the posted speed limit with a green traffic light. Carpenter, riding the scooter, attempted to cross US 92 northbound in or near the crosswalk, entering the path of the Toyota, which had the right-of-way. Carpenter was wearing dark clothing and no helmet.

The westbound lanes of US 92 were closed for approximately four hours during the investigation. No criminal or civil charges are anticipated at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing. Nothing further at this time.
