$11 Million Project Upgrades Wrong-Way Detection on Polk Parkway & Central Florida Turnpike

Polk County, FL – Friday, October 10, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, as part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Wrong-Way Driving Prevention Initiative, is upgrading the Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection System across multiple counties, with a focus on Polk County. The project targets Florida’s Turnpike/State Road (SR) 91, Beachline Expressway/SR 528, Polk Parkway/SR 589, and Veterans Expressway/Suncoast Parkway/SR 589 in Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Polk, Orange, and Brevard counties.

In Polk County, the initiative involves increasing wrong-way signage equipped with radars along the Polk Parkway/SR 589 to detect vehicles traveling in the wrong direction. The system aims to monitor, detect, and prevent wrong-way driving while alerting law enforcement and Traffic Management Center staff for response.

Construction will occur during daytime and nighttime hours, with lane closures primarily scheduled during off-peak hours to reduce traffic congestion. Some lane closures, ramp closures, and detours will be necessary. Advance notices of closures will be provided through the Enterprise’s weekly lane closure and work zone advisory.

The project, costing approximately $11 million, is expected to be completed in 2025. Nothing further at this time.
