BARTOW, FL – The Bartow Police Department is currently accepting applications for its newly established Citizen Advisory Board. The board will consist of seven members appointed by Police Chief Stephen Walker.
The board’s stated purpose is to build relationships between residents and law enforcement and to enhance quality of life in Bartow through review of department policies, past police-citizen interactions, new programs, and community-oriented policing strategies. The board is not authorized to investigate specific personnel matters or individual police-related incidents.
Members must be Polk County residents, at least 21 years old, pass a background check, have no felony convictions or convictions for crimes of violence or moral turpitude, complete the department’s Citizen’s Police Academy within one year, and participate in at least one police ride-along. Appointments are for two-year terms, with a maximum service limit of eight years. The board is required to reflect a cross-section of the county by gender, age, race, and economic background. Members serve without compensation.
The board is required to meet at least quarterly, with all meetings open to the public and subject to Florida’s public records and open meetings laws. A quorum consists of a simple majority of members, and official actions require a simple majority vote. Members elect a chair and vice-chair from among themselves.
The board may request information from the chief of police, issue recommendations on policies, training, crime prevention, and community policing, and submit an annual report to the chief by May 15 each year.
